Healing Before the Aisle: Trauma-Informed, Culturally Responsive Premarital Counseling for Couples of Color Using the Before I Do Method ™

Olivia Baylor

LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, CFMHE, CCTSI, CBC, CAMS-II, RYT-200

"Olivia L. Baylor, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, CFMHE, CCTSI, CBC, CAMS-II, RYT-200, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, national continuing education provider, and developer of The Before I Do Method™, a trauma-informed, culturally responsive framework for premarital counseling with couples of color and other historically underserved populations. As founder and CEO of My Mental Health University®, she leads a national CE provider serving clinicians, educators, and community professionals across the United States.

Olivia holds clinical licensure in seven states and contributes to the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as a Subject Matter Expert and Item Writer for the TeleMental Health (BC-TMH) certification examination. Her clinical practice, Life Revisions Counseling, LLC, focuses on couples, trauma survivors, and adults navigating the intersections of identity, faith, immigration, and systemic strain. Her specialty certifications span trauma, forensic mental health, anger management, bariatric mental health, telemental health, and yoga-informed somatic practice.

Olivia developed The Before I Do Method™ in response to a critical gap in premarital counseling: most existing models are generic and culturally neutral, failing to account for the deeper experiences of couples navigating racial trauma, family-of-origin patterns, faith, intergenerational wounds, and systemic strain that disproportionately affects couples of color. The Method provides clinicians with a structured, justice-centered framework for the deeper work of pre-commitment care.

She is also the founder of the Premarital Counseling Directory, a national platform connecting engaged and newly committed couples with premarital-focused therapists, and is developing the Certified Pre-Marital Specialist (CPMS) credential through My Mental Health University®.

Olivia's work is committed to expanding access to culturally responsive, trauma-informed care, particularly for couples and communities of color, and to providing clinicians with the tools, frameworks, and confidence to do this work with depth, integrity, and clinical rigor."

Healing Before the Aisle: Trauma-Informed, Culturally Responsive Premarital Counseling for Couples of Color Using the Before I Do Method ™

Premarital counseling in clinical practice remains largely generic and culturally neutral, often relying on communication-focused interventions that fail to address the unique developmental, relational, and systemic experiences of couples of color, intercultural couples, immigrant couples, and partners navigating racial trauma, family-of-origin patterns, faith and religious values, and systemic strain. Existing models offer limited frameworks for assessing pre-commitment readiness through a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens.

This session introduces clinicians to The Before I Do Method ™ , a culturally responsive, trauma-informed premarital counseling framework developed by Olivia L. Baylor, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, CFMHE, CCTSI, CBC, CAMS-II, RYT-200. The framework integrates principles from trauma-informed care, attachment theory, cultural humility, intergenerational trauma scholarship, and faith-informed clinical practice into a structured approach to pre-commitment work with couples.

Participants will examine culturally specific premarital considerations, including intergenerational trauma, racial socialization, family-of-origin dynamics, faith integration, and immigration-related stressors. The session will review evidence-informed assessment and intervention techniques drawn from the Method, with applied clinical examples relevant to diverse couples. Participants will develop a clinical practice plan to integrate culturally responsive premarital work into their settings and identify pathways for clinical specialization in premarital counseling.
