Beyond Birth: Addressing Perinatal Mental Health and Breastfeeding Disparities in Black and Brown Communities
Course Summary
This presentation highlights the critical intersection of maternal health and mental health for Black and Brown women, emphasizing how untreated perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), chronic stress, and systemic inequities contribute to disproportionate maternal and infant health outcomes. Participants will explore how culturally responsive clinical practice including mental health screening, breastfeeding support, trauma-informed care, and interdisciplinary collaboration can improve maternal well-being and reduce infant mortality. Through a lens of equity and lived experience, the session will outline practical strategies for social workers, clinicians, and perinatal support professionals to identify risks early, dismantle stigma, and support healthy transitions from pregnancy to postpartum.
