Presenter's Bio
Dr. Jenay Garrett is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a Certified EMDR Therapist, and a dedicated Trauma Professional whose work is rooted in compassion, advocacy, and empowerment. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology & Human Services and her Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University, later completing her Ph.D. in Human & Social Services with a concentration in Family Studies & Interventions. Her doctoral research explored the reintegration experiences of African American teenage girls through the lens of their parents and guardians—work that continues to inform her commitment to culturally responsive care.
With more than 15 years of experience across the human services and mental health fields, Dr. Garrett has served in diverse settings including shelters, schools, non-profit organizations, partial hospitalization programs, inpatient facilities, and outpatient therapy practices. Her clinical expertise spans work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups, giving her a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the communities she serves.
As the owner of P.E.A.C.E. Clinical Solutions, LLC, Dr. Garrett provides individual counseling, clinical supervision, and consultation. She specializes in supporting individuals navigating all forms of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Her therapeutic approach centers on helping clients reclaim their power, heal at their own pace, and cultivate sustainable emotional wellness.
Beyond the therapy room, Dr. Garrett is passionate about mental health advocacy—particularly within Black and Brown communities. She is the creator of “Swerve The Stigma,” an initiative dedicated to raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and challenging long-standing misconceptions about mental health.
Driven by purpose, Dr. Garrett believes her calling is to help others journey toward peace, healing, justice, and growth. Her work reflects a steadfast commitment to creating safe, affirming spaces where individuals can be seen, heard, and supported as they transform their lives.

Course Summary
This interactive workshop invites you to rethink how you learn and hold BIPOC youth’s stories. You’ll discover creative, play-based strategies for gathering racial, cultural, and identity narratives early in treatment, in ways that feel safe, engaging, and empowering. Drawing from EMDR concepts, play therapy, and culturally humble practice—while remaining accessible to all clinicians—this workshop highlights the transformative impact of truly honoring a client’s full lived experience. Attendees will leave with concrete, culturally grounded techniques they can confidently use in their work right away.
